Book Nook: The Fertility Doctor's Guide to Overcoming Infertility - Interview

The Fertility Doctor's Guide to Overcoming Infertility: Discovering Your Reproductive Potential and Maximizing Your Odds of Having a Baby” was recently released Jan 7, 2020 by Harvard Common Press/Quarto. Among the many topics in reproductive medicine, Dr. Trolice explains the most optimal time of month and life to conceive, the right time to see a fertility specialist, evidence-based diagnostic tests and treatment, and alternative family building: egg/sperm donors, surrogacy, and adoption.

Why did you decide to write this book?
My love for the field of infertility began during my third year of medical school and has never abated. Several years later, during my Ob/Gyn residency training, my wife and I began trying to conceive but were unsuccessful. Following the next 10 years of a consuming journey that involved multiple unsuccessful treatments, we resolved our infertility through the adoption of our five angels.

My enriching experience provided me more insight on the struggle of my patients and compelled me to be a proactive advocate to help them navigate through a new and usually expensive venture. As a result, my book was born not only to inspire and educate those desiring a child but to caution against unproven and costly therapies, i.e., urging “caveat emptor.”

What sets it apart from other books about infertility?
Infertility is extremely personal to me. My passion is to empower my patients with appropriate guidance so they may navigate their path with confidence. As a board-certified Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility specialist with more than 20 years of providing clinical care to infertility patients, I explain the science in an easy to understand manner. My approach is always to respect the physical, emotional, and financial investment by a patient/couple who is having difficulty conceiving. This book conveys medical evidence for diagnostic testing and treatment options while including real patient anecdotes over my 20+ year career, including my personal struggle.

Why is it important for women facing infertility to have a book like this that lays out all the information and options?
Women and men faced with the challenge of family building often experience a life-crisis. Studies have shown the stress of infertility is analogous to the response by patients to a cancer diagnosis. Infertility is a unique disease because women and men typically want to overcome their challenge naturally. As a result, the psychological disappointment of beginning treatment can become as much of an obstacle as the disease. By accepting infertility, patients can reduce burdens such as anger, blame and sadness while focusing on viable options of having a baby.

My book is a guide to all those interested in creating or growing their family including those who are having difficulty conceiving. Too often, women and men receive misinformation about fertility, particularly from the internet. This resource details all aspects of reproduction – from enhancing natural methods and optimizing health through the most advanced reproductive technologies of IVF, egg donation, using a gestational carrier and embryo genetic testing.
