Thrifty Thinking: 11 Ways to Save at Target

Many shoppers claim Target as their happy place. It’s bright, it’s clean, it’s organized, and it’s essentially a one-stop shop for everything from yummy groceries to stylish decor. Plus, Target’s prices are affordable. But just because it’s already easy to score a deal at Target doesn’t mean we don’t have expert information to help you save more!

Check out the tips below from RetailMeNot's Shopping and Trends Expert Sara Skirboll to shop to your cart's content!

1. Open a Target RedCard
Target’s RedCard can be a strong savings tool. There are two versions: One is a card that is linked to a checking account; it works just as a debit card does. The second is a credit card; individuals must qualify for the credit line to obtain this card. In all cases, RedCard holders get 5 percent off their in-store (including in-store Starbucks purchases!) and online orders whenever they use the card and early access to special products and promotions. You also get free two-day shipping and free, extended returns as a RedCard holder.
2. Shop early in the week
One of the key reasons Target shoppers tend to hit the stores on Sunday is to cash in on discounts from the weekly paper. That’s a great idea, but shopping on Monday and Tuesday gives the company time to restock the shelves, which means favorite items that were MIA Sunday might be available.
3. Know which days to shop
Rumors swirl around that Target pushes out clearance deals on certain departments on specific days:
  • Monday: Electronics, accessories, kids’ clothing, books, baby, stationery
  • Tuesday: Domestic goods, women’s clothing, pets, market (food items)
  • Wednesday: Men’s clothing, health & beauty, diapers, lawn & garden, furniture
  • Thursday: Houseware, lingerie, shoes, toys, sporting goods, decor & luggage
  • Friday: Auto, cosmetics, hardware, jewelry

4. Earn cash back through the Target Circle rewards program
In October, Target launched their free Target Circle rewards program that allows members to earn 1 percent cash back on every purchase to redeem at Target later. To use it, just swipe the barcode from the Target app or provide your phone number at checkout. In addition to cash back, members also receive special deals and perks like a birthday gift, early access to special sales and personalized deals based on your shopping habits. With every purchase, you’ll also earn votes to help pick which nonprofits Target will donate to. (A note that Target’s Cartwheel offers are now rolled into the Target Circle offers.)
5. Stack your Target coupons
You can combine Target Circle offers with Target store coupons, manufacturer coupons and Target RedCard discounts, meaning it’s possible to save four ways on the same item. If you’re checking out with Target Circle offers and coupons, have the cashier first ring up the items you’re buying. Next, have them scan the Target store coupons, followed by the manufacturer coupons. From there, provide them with the barcode to scan, and then pay using your RedCard. which will give you 5 percent off the total purchase.
6. Use the Target weekly ads
Target runs weekly savings ads. Those who purchase a newspaper are sure to get them, but they’re also available online. Most often, these ads run from Sunday through Saturday, with new product sales every Sunday. In addition to this, there may be special seasonal offers, such as back-to-school savings and holiday savings.
7. Check out RetailMeNot for even more Target deals
There are countless savings options available at RetailMeNot for Target shoppers. These range from discounts on specific items to percentage-off savings. These offers change all the time, which makes it important to check back to learn about new offers. Another savings tool from RetailMeNot is Genie. This browser extension automatically finds and applies the best Target discounts online for you. So easy.
8. Know where to look in the store, a.k.a the end caps
Target is one of many companies that does routine clearance sales. The store might not advertise these outright, but Target tends to use the same techniques when it does. For example, the store commonly places yellow or red stickers on products with a discounted price. These items end up along the end caps (or the ends of the aisle). Also, Target sometimes places clearance items in the seasonal section. It’s always worth a trip there.
9. Use Target’s wedding and baby registries
For those planning to have a baby or planning a wedding, the Target registry is a must. You’ll get 15 percent off items on the registry that are not purchased. This allows for a significant savings on items that are needed but might not have been purchased for the shower.
10. Check out the clearance section online
It’s not just in-store that you can find crazy clearance deals. Target’s online clearance section often provides 50 percent discounts on thousands of items.
11. Shop the Dollar Spot
Target’s Dollar Spot or Bullseye’s Playground is right at the store entrance and is a great place to peruse, as items in this section typically start at just $1.
