Soul Sustenance: Timothy Plan

he entertainment world is fully entrenched in the movie, music and television awards season, with films, lyrics and programming that promote violence, immorality, sexuality or liberal agendas often receiving the top accolades.

But the 2020 MOVIEGUIDE® Awards, held at the end of January and attended by Timothy Plan founder Art Ally and his wife, Bonnie, celebrate films and television shows that aim to redeem the values of the entertainment industry, according to biblical principles.

Timothy Plan is active in discovering and promoting family-friendly and culturally uplifting entertainment choices. One way is through a biblically screening process unique to Timothy Plan that informs Christian investors whether their God-given resources are being invested in companies that have agendas contrary to the teachings of Scripture or that are actively participating in activities that may prove destructive to communities-at-large.

An intricate screening process provided by eVALUEator Services LLC has been an essential tool to ensure Timothy Plan funds remain biblically responsible. eVALUEator imports information from market data researcher Morningstar and continuously cross checks the holdings against available research. Other investment firms also use this service to help screen their investments, along with several foundations.

“Whether you are new to the faith or are mature in your Christian walk, selecting a mutual fund should be about more than its rate of return—it should also complement your faith,” Ally said. “Until the creation of eVALUEator, it was difficult for individuals to know how to align their investments with their values. Viewing a screen report of a mutual fund can be an eye-opening experience. Christians work hard to abstain from sin in areas encountered daily. Parents are generally on guard to protect children from the negative impact of the culture.”

Family/entertainment makes up one of eight Timothy Plan biblical screens, which consist of five cultural screens and three social screens with multiple subcategories. Companies with one or more violations are removed as an investment option. This information is actively updated and communicated to the Timothy Plan fund managers for compliance and accountability.

At the core of the family/entertainment screen is the realization that families are the foundation of the culture. The screen identifies companies engaged in anti-family entertainment through the promotion of violence, language, sex and drugs through advertisements, media, games, stores, establishments and publications.

Additional Timothy Plan screens include: life/abortion, purity/pornography, marriage/lifestyle, liberty/rights, stewardship/gambling, longevity/tobacco and sobriety/alcohol.

The Allys were able to witness in person the presentation of MOVIEGUIDE® Awards such as the Epiphany Prize to the Most Inspiring Movie, the Epiphany Prize to the Most Inspiring TV Program, the Faith & Freedom Award for Movies, the Faith & Freedom Award for TV, the Best Movie for Families, the Best Movie for Mature Audiences, the Grace Award for Most Inspiring Performance for Movies and the Grace Award for Most Inspiring Performance for TV.

MOVIEGUIDE® Award nominees included television shows as such “When Calls the Heart,” “The Crown,” “Last Man Standing” and “Heartland,” as well as films such as “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” “Breakthrough,” “Harriet,” “Overcomer,” “Apollo 11,” “Dumbo,” “The LEGO Movie 2,” “The Lion King,” “The Pilgrim’s Progress,” “Toy Story 4,” “1917,” “Little Women” and “Unplanned.”

Timothy Plan has a special connection to the “Unplanned” film. In March 2019, Timothy Partners Ltd., of Timothy Plan—biblically responsible mutual funds and ETFs, bought out seven Orlando-area movie theaters that featured the pro-life movie. Free tickets were offered to moviegoers to experience the film that provided “an eye-opening look inside the abortion industry from a woman who was once its most passionate advocate.”

Nominated actors for the MOVIEGUIDE® Awards also included Tom Hanks, Chrissy Metz, Alex Kendrick, Candace Cameron Bure, Kathleen Turner and Ashley Bratcher of “Unplanned.”

MOVIEGUIDE® was founded in 1985 by Dr. Ted Baehr in Atlanta, first as a radio program, then a TV program and finally as a bi-weekly magazine. MOVIEGUIDE® TV and radio shows are broadcasted in over 200 countries and a website offers parents and families resources such as movie reviews and articles. MOVIEGUIDE®’s mission is to redeem the values of the entertainment industry, according to biblical principles, by influencing industry executives and artists.
