Book Nook: My Teachers are Animals

As a teacher, Mark Bonner knows the majority of parents are harbouring anxiety over their children’s return to school. They’ve been off for a long time, homeschooling has been a challenge and the structure of the school day has likely been forgotten.

But his new picture book, ‘My Teachers Are Animals’ reminds young readers that their school days are fun, playful and something to look forward to. Especially at Darwin Woods School – where all of the teachers are animals!

Synopsis:

Are schools scary? Boring? Children behaving like animals? Well, not at Darwin Woods. Jessica takes us on a tour of her school where the TEACHERS are ANIMALS and the only way to learn is through PLAY! Under the watchful eye of Miss Tweet, Mr Squirt paints with his trunk and the pupils wear trunks as they surf in science. With a sloth for a PE teacher and a pig for a lunch lady, this school has to be seen to be believed. Are you ready to come in and let classes begin?

“The entire story is written in rhyme, so children can go beyond just reading and looking at the illustrations, to speak aloud and engage with the narrative on a deeper level,” explains the author. “The story is of course whimsical, but there’s a very real message that school itself is tons of fun and something to be embraced. I won’t admit it too readily, but most of the characters are based on teachers I know in the real world!”

About the Author:

Mark Bonner is a teacher who, by his own admission, refuses to fully embrace adult life and leave childhood behind. His daughter is his best friend, adventure partner and main reason for writing, (but not only because all good ideas come from her!) This is his debut.
