Amid Coronavirus isolation and racial tensions, a new study shows a sharp rise in mental health disorders, substance abuse and suicidal thoughts.
Nationally in 2020, 18.6% of Americans are struggling with mental health, 7.7% report issues with substance abuse, and 4.2% are having suicidal thoughts.
The top five states for mental health issues are Idaho: 25% of adults, Oregon 23.6%, Utah: 23.5%, West Virginia: 22.9% and Washington: 22.8%. New Jersey ranks has the fewest reported incidents with just 16.2%.
PSYDPrograms.org recently released a study on Mental Health Incidents in 2020 by State after analyzing data from Mental Health America and the CDC on anxiety, depression, substance abuse and suicidal thoughts.
Additional findings show a federal disaster distress hotline reported a 891% increase in call volume; every one-point drop in the unemployment rate correlates to a 3.5% increase in opioid addiction; Google keyword searched for “online therapy” have doubled; and reports of anxiety rose by more than 34% from January through March, the month the pandemic lockdowns began.
