I'm a teacher, so I thought it would be fun to review My Teachers are Animals from Troubador Publishing. It's a fun kids' book that reimagines the school with more of a zoo feel, animals and all. My favorite? A sloth as a PE teacher!
The illustrations are bold and bright, playing along with the whimsical, imaginative feel. Even if it's a far cry from what schools look like on a normal basis, it's sure to capture the imagination of kids!
“The entire story is written in rhyme, so children can go beyond just reading and looking at the illustrations, to speak aloud and engage with the narrative on a deeper level,” explains the author. “The story is of course whimsical, but there’s a very real message that school itself is tons of fun and something to be embraced. I won’t admit it too readily, but most of the characters are based on teachers I know in the real world!”
Continuing, “I was thrilled to collaborate with Alex Crump who brings the story to life with his bold and beautiful illustrations. It’s certainly a wild adventure that will get young people reading, talking and hopefully bringing their own adventures into the classroom again very soon.”
Reviews have been glowing. Matt Potterton writes, “A thoroughly entertaining and fun book. It will keep little ones' attention throughout, with amusing rhyming story-telling and lovely illustrations, it will make every child who reads it wish they attended Darwin Woods School!”
Mark Bonner is a teacher who, by his own admission, refuses to fully embrace adult life and leave childhood behind. His daughter is his best friend, adventure partner and main reason for writing, (but not only because all good ideas come from her!) This is his debut.
