National Working Parent Scholarship Offered to Ease Cost of Higher Education

Job-Applications.com recently announced that August 15 is the deadline for the company’s national Working Parent Scholarship. The scholarship, which has been offered for the past seven years, recognizes the efforts of students in the United States who balance the difficult tasks of parenthood, working and seeking a higher education.

Job-Applications.com, one of the leading job application resources available in the United States, created the $1,000 Working Parent Scholarship in 2013 to help working parents obtain a better education and build a career.

Applicants submit a 600 to 1,000 word essay on how to successfully balance parenthood, working and excelling in school. Since the scholarship was established, more than $30,000 has been awarded by the Ohio-based company to recipients throughout the U.S. For the next round, scholarships must be submitted by August 15. The winner is expected to be determined by August 31.

“The financial strain on working parents returning to school throughout the United States is real. This year, the economic downturn created by the coronavirus pandemic has added to the financial struggles faced by millions of families throughout the U.S. The Working Parent Scholarship is our way to help reduce some of that pressure,” said Job-Applications.com President Doug Crawford. “We are pleased to, once again, award this $1,000 scholarship to a promising student who is balancing the responsibilities of parenting, working and returning to school.”

The Need: Addressing the Cost of College

The Working Parent Scholarship was created by the Canton, Ohio-based company to help address the financial burden of obtaining a college education. The cost of paying for a higher education continues to be a strain on family budgets. Average student loan debt upon graduation in 2018 nationally was $29,200 according to a recent report from The Institute for College Access & Success.

Crawford explains why the company, which is focused on helping people apply effectively for jobs, originally created the scholarship: "We want to get more involved with our users and give back in an even bigger way. Not only do we want to help people get a job, we want to help people get better jobs,” he said.

To date, Job-Applications.com has awarded $1,000 scholarships to people in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin. Through its sister site, job-applications.ca, scholarships also have been awarded to working parents throughout Canada.
