Parenting Pointers: Back-to-School Tips from TheSoul Publishing

Back-to-school is finally here, which means students are getting ready or just beginning the new year of classes – whether they are going in-person or attending online. But how can someone make sure they are ready for school, both with ideas for staying organized and tips for updating your school supplies and fashion?

Here are some tips from TheSoul Publishing – the force behind viral channels like 5 Minute Crafts and Bright Side.

Ideas for staying organized in high school are below with more here.

-          Rather than having so many separate bags - pencil case, purse, tote/backpack, etc. - high schoolers or parents can get crafty to make the inside of a schoolbag more manageable. Using a hot glue gun and a Ziploc, you can make your own built-in pencil holder.

-          Color coding is a popular way to stay organized, and that principle can be applied to notebooks as well - even if you have a few that look the same. Drawing with a highlighter on the top of the pages can help you label green for math, pink for history, and blue for science, for example.

-          For virtual learning, many students are relying on computers or tablets to watch their teachers and do their research, but holding up a tablet all day can be tiring and distracting. Command strip hooks that can be hung on the wall can help you set up a stable screen while you take notes and listen to class.

-          If you study with flash cards, having a place to store them easily without a rubber band can be an unexpected annoyance, but by putting an envelope inside the cover of a notebook, you can keep your Spanish flashcard in your Spanish notebook, and your SAT words in your English notebook so they’re easy to find.

Ways Kids Can Stay Engaged:

-          Science and social studies classes aren’t the same when everything is remote, but there are different videos and content students can turn to in order to keep learning new things. Seeking out fun facts - like these random facts from Bright Side - can expand what you know.

-          Riddles are another good way to keep you mind engaged. Seeking out riddles like these or these can help you think differently than you normally would.

-          No art class? No problem. TheSoul Publishing’s Slick Slime Sam channel is filled with kid-friendly craft and art project ideas that can easily be done at home, with an entire section of “Slick School Crafts.”

-          If your kid is starting school (at home!) and you want to give them a project to get excited about it, Slick Slime Sam has ideas about making your own desk organizer that can then be used year-round.
