Book Nook: Author Amy Parker

Author Amy Parker has recently published several books - How to Get a Mommy to Sleep & How to Get a Daddy to Sleep. In addition, she has a seasonal book perfect for the fall season, Night Night, Pumpkin. These are really cute bedtime stories for kids ages 4-8.

I had a chance to interview her to learn more about her writing.
  1. Why did you write these books?

After more than a decade of helping parents get their kids to sleep through the Night Night series, I thought it would be fun to flip the switch a bit and let the kids tell us how to get their parents to sleep. Of course, when I wrote these books, I had no idea what the state of the world would be right now. And now, more than ever, parents and kids alike need a little humor and empathy infused into the exhaustion that we’re all feeling. I’m hoping that, through these books and the quality time they encourage, parents and kids will be able to face each day with a renewed perspective and whole lot of grace.

  1. What's your favorite thing about writing children's books?

Really, my favorite thing isn’t writing the books; it’s the reaction to them. When I get photos and videos from parents of their children interacting with the books, seeing how they’re engaging kids, seeing them pointing at the pictures, hearing them repeat simple words, and seeing how these books generate lots and lots of snuggles, that is the absolute best part about being an author for these children and their families.

  1. How can parents encourage little readers?

Just read. Give them books to play with. Buy them the books that they point to on the shelves. Let them feel your warmth and your heartbeat and the soothing tone of your voice as you read to them at night. Point to the pictures. Ask them to “read” to you. Show them how much you love reading, and they will follow suit.

  1. How can parents find books that are fun for themselves and their kids?

Think back to the books you loved as a kid, and think about why you loved those books. Share those books with your children, and find others like them. When you go to the store or the library, let everyone take turns picking a favorite book, and let everyone take turns sharing it with your family. Through the process, you’ll not only learn what each person loves to read, but you’ll also open each person up to a whole new realm of favorites!
