"It’s ok if becoming a mom is both the best and worst thing to happen to you.” As horrified as Alyssa would have been at the sound of someone saying that while she was pregnant, this became one of many truths she gave herself permission to live after giving birth.
I had a chance to read Alyssa Deroses's new book, “Momoir: A New Mom’s Journey to Embracing Her Not-So-Perfect Motherhood”. It was an extremely honest, sometimes raw, look at motherhood. Right off the bat, the recognition of the fact that motherhood is both fantastic and not-so-great brings this book a strong air of authenticity. It's not written as a mom just sharing the picture-perfect parts of life, but a mom who's willing to be real about her experiences.
At times funny, other times heart-wrenching, this book manages to make both Bible verses and expletives seem at home in her writing style. She's real about her miscarriage experience, and writes from a "works-for-me" approach that doesn't judge other parents for making different decisions. It's a good read for anyone who struggles with the temptation to feel like the perfect mother, to feel like there's someone else in the journey with you.
