Book Nook: Teasing, Reporting, Integrity, and Patience

Boys Town press publishes many different books that are great for teaching kids values. They have books that touch on a variety of different ages, and are a good way to teach kids because it's more interesting than just a lecture. Plus, there are extra resources available on the website for further discussion and to reinforce lessons learned.

But I Need Your Help Now! by Bryan Smith, illustrated by Lisa M. Griffin

This book follows Isaac, a second grader who lacks patience when it comes to getting help. His mother guides him through how to get someone's attention in a polite way, and how to wait if help doesn't come right away.

My Name’s Sammy, and I’m No Snitch by Jeff Tucker, illustrated by Miranda Morrissey

It's hard for kids to realize the difference between snitching or tattling, and when it's important to let an adult know. This book provides a real-life situation that many kids witness - bullying - and gives guidelines to kids for when it's important to share what's going on with an adult.

He’s Just Not Teasing! by Jennifer Licate, illustrated by Suzanne Beaky

This book looks at things from the a slightly different perspective - when teasing becomes something more. It can be hard for kids to realize when they've crossed the line between teasing and fun, and when it becomes more mean-spirited.

The “I” in Integrity by Julia Cook, illustrated by Kyle Merriman

Integrity is a very important value, and it can be a challenge to instill in kids, especially when they're still in the age where the difference between truth and fiction is a little fuzzy. This book does a good job about putting a gentle lesson about integrity into an easy-to-understand story.
