Fun Freetime: Laurie Berkner Live Pajama Party Virtual Concert

Get out the sleeping bags, pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, and snacks! Iconic children's musician Laurie Berkner invites everyone to stay in their pajamas and join her for a special "Pajama Party" LIVE Virtual Family Concert on Sunday, September 20 at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Laurie's website: HERE.

Laurie Berkner's Pajama Party Concert will bring viewers a front row seat to the real Laurie Berkner show experience, with lights, camera, and sing-along action.

"I am so excited to be coming back with my third Virtual Family Concert!" says Laurie Berkner. "We have already started building our own pillow and blanket fort for the set of our Pajama Party, and I'm really looking forward to all of the singing and games we'll be playing together. I'm also so grateful to all of the many fans who are supporting me as an artist by attending these events. And I can't wait to do an entire show in my pajamas!"

Fans of all ages should plan to grab their instruments (or noisemakers), their dancin' shoes (or slippers), their superhero capes (or blankets), and a stuffed animal (for their heads)!

Laurie will set the mood with her beloved children's classic, "Pajama Time!" She'll lead kids and grownups alike in pajama party pertinent activities, like searching for pillows among the onscreen graphics, and singing along to songs like "Pillowland," "Popcorn Calling Me," "The Silly Brushing Song," "Bubbles," and "Moon Moon Moon." Laurie will include make-believe and games at her Pajama Party, with such tunes as "Superhero," "Come Out, Come Out," and "Shake Your Body Down," and she promises to sing an array of fan favorites like "Waiting for the Elevator" (the title track of Laurie's most recent, NAPPA award-winning album), "Victor Vito," "I Really Love to Dance," and "Pig On Her Head." Laurie Berkner Band member Susie Lampert will even drop in to spend a bit of time at the Pajama Party!

What have you enjoyed most about doing the virtual concerts?
I love singing, playing and performing, and I love the feeling of giving something to kids and families that makes them feel good, connected, excited and happy during this crazy time. I also really like working with rest of the people who help make up the Two Tomatoes team and rising to the challenge of it all. It feels like we’re developing something that there hasn’t really been the demand for before. It’s inspiring and lets me be creative in a whole new way.

How do you come up with your themes?
It’s really a group effort. Part of my team is a trio of women who help me plan many things like the themes for the Facebook Lives I’ve been doing. We think about what would be fun for kids (animals, outer space), traditional early education themes that parents and teachers might find helpful for online learning (colors, letters, numbers), what ideas would fit with songs I’ve written (nature, food), what’s relevant in our world right now (helping, feelings), and even what random lesser-celebrated “days” we can incorporate (like “National Pretzel Day” or “Look up at the Sky Day”).

What are some ways that families can use music to improve their mental health when things are unexpectedly different, like they are now?
Have impromptu dance parties and move your bodies to music, together. I think it’s easy to forget how healing allowing ourselves to respond to music in this physical way can be. Let yourself be vulnerable and go ahead and make your own music by turning feelings and ideas into songs - no matter how silly or imperfect they seem to you. Your kids will love them, and feel loved by you for doing it. Sing songs that your kids love, OUT LOUD, along with them! In that way they see and hear you experiencing joy from something that brings them joy. Use music that is familiar and soothing at night to help calm their anxieties before sleep. Hold your kids while you both listen to music. Hug them, cuddle them, help them associate that music with feeling loved. Then hearing the same music when you are not there can be a comfort all on its own.
