With states and local governments continuing to adjust levels of measured reopening and social distancing, it’s difficult for people to find activities which they can safely undertake these days. Julie Jo Severson, author of Secret Twin Cities: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure, has compiled a number of safe and fun things to do during the upcoming holiday and winter season from the book:
- Tour the cosmos (and your brain) at the Bell Museum planetarium while checking out the museum's world-renowned dioramas.
- Get spooked in Frankenstein's Laboratory at the Bakken Museum.
- Take an online or socially distanced drum class at the Women's Drum Center in St. Paul.
- Go see one of the largest flocks of Trumpeter Swans in the Midwest at Swan Park in Monticello.
- Explore the large-scale artwork at the Union Depot, some of which make for great family photo backdrops.
- Enjoy the winter beauty at the China Friendship Garden at Phalen Park.
Julie Jo Severson is a Minnesota native who grew up dreaming of working in a newsroom like Mary Richards on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”. These days she’s a freelance journalist and editor living in a Minneapolis suburb with her husband and three teens. With a longtime passion for preserving life’s rich and whimsical stories before they fade away, Severson launched the blog “Carvings on a Desk”, cocurated the anthology Here in the Middle, and works with individuals to record their personal histories for future generations.
