Gooey Gadgets - Founder Interview

Jaclyn Zimmer, a 38-year-old mom from St. Louis Park, Minn., officially launched her new company, Gooey Kids, despite the pandemic and a personal battle with breast cancer. Her first product line is Gooey Gadgets, a nontoxic and streak-free screen wipe that can eliminate 99.9% of gunk and grime. Zimmer saw a need for the product after she could not find a safe wipe without alcohol, parabens, phthalates, fragrances, VOCs, ammonia or formaldehyde.

Zimmer’s dream to make Gooey Gadgets a reality started in 2018. She overcame her first challenge when she worked with a chemist for two years to develop a toxic-free formula that larger companies failed to produce. The pandemic brought a new set of obstacles, such as manufacturing delays and distribution concerns.

As Gooey Gadgets was about to make its debut, Zimmer was diagnosed with breast cancer on October 8, 2020. Despite weekly chemotherapy treatments scheduled through March, Zimmer continues to operate her business while balancing her two sons’ virtual schooling.

“I realize 2020 is a tough year for so many people – but I continue to concentrate on the positives,” said Zimmer. “I am focused on being strong for my family and continuing to run Gooey Kids into the future. With so many harsh cleaners and sanitizers being used more regularly during the pandemic, the need for a nontoxic wipe is greater than ever.”

I had a chance to interview her to learn more:

Why did you create Gooey Gadgets?
The idea for Gooey Gadget Wipes started 7 years ago when my kids were really young and their screens were so caked with gunk and grime. At that time, I looked to find a non-toxic screen cleaner that I felt was safe to use but there simply wasn’t! I was surprised, being that so many kids these days have their own tablets and electronics. I thought what are parents using? Maybe my kids' iPads are just dirtier than others. But the more I talked to other moms I realized it was a more universal problem than I thought. So just 2 years ago I decided to go for it and create my own.

What has been the biggest challenge with the timing of starting the business?
In that 5 years I mulled over starting the business, I found there never was a great time to start. My kids were young and I was working full-time as a Product Designer. But one afternoon over lunch with a good friend I shared my idea and she responded with such enthusiasm and encouragement that it lit a fire under me, I was inspired to start despite the lack of good timing! So the next 2 years I pulled all the strings together for this amazing product and right as I was going to launch a shoe dropped. Just 2 weeks before, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was a blow I did not see coming. There had to be a shift in my priorities, so it’s been a slower launch than planned. But I’m determined to take care of myself and my family and know Gooey Kids will be my outlet to get away and have a little something for myself.

Have there been any advantages?
There’s been so much going on with the pandemic, juggling home schooling, chemo appointments and life. But Gooey Gadgets allows me to have another outlet that feels rewarding. And also allows me flexibility to be home during the day to tend to the needs of my family.

How do you juggle parenting and running a business?
As with many families during COVID, homeschooling and working are a delicate balance. I’m not sure I’m doing a better job than anyone else in the same situation. It’s challenging. Sometimes I rocked it, and other days I feel like a failure. We are adjusting to the ebbs and flows of this situation we all find ourselves in and we are doing the best we can with what we have.

Before creating Gooey Gadgets, Zimmer worked at Minnetonka-based IQ Accessories, Inc., where she designed products for Target, CVS and other retailers.

As the first product within Gooey Kids, Gooey Gadgets screen wipes are made in the U.S.A. and are now available at GooeyKids.com. Follow Google Kids on Instagram at instagram.com/gooeykids.
