Book Nook: Grace's Rockin’ Roll Adventure

Research shows that students who receive music instruction do better in math and science. Unsurprisingly, students who like at least one class or teacher are less likely to drop out. Music classes are often a way for students to enjoy learning outside of other subjects (or a way to increase student interest within those core subjects).

I had a chance to review a book that aims to make music education fun for kids. Grace's Rockin’ Roll Adventure, starring Steven Van Zand, follows the adventure of Grace and friends as her class wins a prize to attend a concert where Little Steven Van Zandt’s band is playing. At the end of the concert, Little Steven Van Zandt gives her an electric guitar which inspires her and her friends to learn about rock and roll and to become a Rock and Soul musician herself. It's a fun, engaging story for younger readers, and could easily be used as a gift for a budding music fan (classically trained or otherwise) or incorporated into a music class for kids. Even for older kids, using books in education can provide a change of pace and novelty that can increase engagement.

Music is a pretty powerful tool for education. The author has several other music-themed books available. This book and lesson plan are being used in schools across the country, and parents can now actually purchase the book and lesson plan at a significant discount.

If you have a kid or student with an interest in rock music, or are looking for a book to help engage students in music, this can be a fun, visually-appealing resource.
