While mythology and legend are timeless fixtures of the literary world, they’re also a profound vehicle for helping youngsters understand life, themselves, and their place in the universe.
Nobody knows this better than writer Annabelle Newman, whose obsession with the legends of fairy rings has empowered her to write a truly inspirational novel for children.
‘Alexa and the Fairy Ring’ is a fantasy book unlike anything else on the shelves – as young readers make a new best friend, and become acquainted with some life-changing fairies.
Synopsis:
Alexa and the Fairy Ring is a short novel about a young girl who just wants to be loved by her Mum. On a school trip at a nature reserve a deed is made for Alexa to eat a “FORBIDDEN MUSHROOM” by a school enemy. Humans are forbid to eat them, because they may be placed with a curse of death. Alexa agrees to the deed because she is blackmailed to not get bullied anymore if she eats one. Alexa falls into the ring that opens a gateway into fairy world. And this is the start of a journey that could make her wish come true of finally finding love.
“I actually wrote this novel to deflect my own struggles with mental health,” explains the author. “It was a very humbling and cathartic experience to use my interest in fairy rings for good, and gear it toward young children – especially girls – who may also be struggling. The story reminds us all that love and kinship are always within our reach.”
Continuing, “But of course, the message is wrapped up in a story that will enthrall young readers and ensure their interest is kept until the very last page. Initial feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and there’s nothing more I could wish for!”
Indeed, reviews have been glowing. Mark Thomas writes, “I found this book to me so exciting, it filled my imagination and brought me to places of fantasy. Alexa is such a wonderful character, my favourite part is, when she met the Fairy, such fun and excitement follows on her journey. I hope this book is made into a movie one day, it's too good not to be a movie. Buying this book was one of the best thing I brought this month.”
Emmanuel Newman adds, “I recently bought this book on a whim to read to my young cousin who was living with me while her mother was busy working. I had initially only planned to read a chapter to her per night, but my cousin was so interested in the story that I ended up reading all of it to her in a single night. She really liked the characters and their interactions with each other, which she found really funny, and the adventure that involved overcoming various difficulties. My cousin took the book back home with her when her mother returned to pick her up, so it's clear she enjoyed the story.”

About the author, in her own words:
My name is Annabelle Newman. I am from the seaside town Blackpool. For a decade I have been battling with bad mental health. To deflect from my situation, I got into writing my first novel, Alexa and the Fairy Ring. I was inspired by the mythological legends of fairy rings and how they lead to other dimensions. The idea for one of my characters was inspired from a science lesson. Not the most focused student in science class. But one lesson on the rainbow spectrum gave me the character- Dr. Spectrum. A character who has a colourful personality and clothing attire to match.
If this story could help comfort at least a few young girls with any sad predicament they face, this would be a dream come true.
