Book Nook: Funeesha and the Fun Queen

For all of the progress the literary world has made in the last few decades, racial equality and diversity is still lagging behind.  But writer Chad Williamson is on a mission to change that. ‘Funeesha and the Fun Queen’ is his latest release, featuring black characters and a boundless, always-entertaining adventure for young readers.

Funeesha was a bright intelligent, fun loving happy 5 year old, who had not a care in the world about anything except for the next fun thing to do. Everything she did in her life from moment to moment had to be based around having fun.

She lived in a small apartment on the northwest side of London called Bridgestone, with her very busy hard working Jamaican parents, who never seemed happy and hardly ever smiled. Her mum, a school teacher, would always moan about how much work she had to do and the little time she had for herself. Her dad was a talented but struggling musician and complained most of the time about how hard life was.

“My book opens the doors to the Funtartica universe – which invites Funeesha in after she speaks the magic phrase given to her by her late grandfather. Showing the Funearian way of life and  promoting good, honest fun during childhood, and allowing youngsters to have the freedom to grow and discover the world around them.”

Continuing, “It’s also vitally important that we change the landscape of inclusivity and racial diversity in children’s books, which is why I was so proud to put a black family front-and-centre in this volume. We live in a world that is changing quickly, and it’s so important that attitudes to race change with it. I’m extremely proud to be doing my part.”

Reviews have been glowing. Steph writes, “I really enjoyed reading this fun loving children's book. At a time like this, in relation to the pandemic and the way things are. Every child needs to read this story to help them stay in tune to their imagination and believe in themselves. Feel, touch, taste, smell and you will see.”

Kazx adds, “I’m so pleased I have purchased this book it’s a must.”
