Healthy Habits: Covid vs. Allergies

As many families are getting into their routines of going back to work and school, many parents with children who have allergies are getting calls from their children’s school that they need to come pick them up because they have COVID symptoms.  In many cases, having an allergy test that proves that your child has allergies can prevent this call.  For many parents, their child may have suffered for years, but OTC meds were doing an okay job, but now, the time has come to get their child allergy tested, so they can provide the school with documentation that their child does, in fact, have allergies.

Would you be interested in an interview on this topic with a representative of Aspire Allergy & Sinus?  Known for making new and innovative allergy therapies available, Aspire began offering allergy drops in 2012and just recently introduced an exceptionally fast way to treat allergies, the ExACT Immunoplasty procedure. This procedure treats allergies in just eight weeks, rather than years.

I had a chance to learn more in this interview.

Are there symptoms that can distinguish Covid from allergies?
Unfortunately many of the symptoms are the same, and we've seen a lot of people with COVID thinking they have allergies. While both COVID and allergies can produce symptoms of cough, runny nose and general cold-like symptoms, some of the differences are fever and sudden loss of taste or smell, however some do not experience fever with COVID which makes it hard to gauge.

Why is it helpful for parents to get an allergy test, even apart from Covid?
Most people know their children have allergies and have known for years, so now with COVID in the mix, we're seeing a lot of parents that want to address the issue as a means of ruling out COVID. Additionally though, over the counter antihistamines aren't meant to be taken on a regular basis for years on end like a lot of adults and children do. It's a myth that kids will outgrow allergies, and keeping them on medication for years and years for their allergies isn't helping them in the long run.

Can you share some of the advancements in treating allergies?
Now that there are other options in addition to allergy shots, there really is no reason NOT to get your child on the path to allergy relief. Allergy drops are easy to take at home and are painless. We recommend patients take them at the same time as brushing their teeth to establish a routine. Kids respond very well to allergy drops, which are equal in efficacy to allergy shots, but without the pain factor and a lot easier to fit into your lifestyle, as most people aren't able to justify the time spent taking kids out of school and taking time off of work to go to an allergist each week for allergy shots.

The ExACT Immunoplasty treatment is another option that we see more and more parents choosing for their children. ExACT is a series of three injections administered into the inguinal lymph node, in the upper inner thigh. In just three injections, you can be allergy free, which has been absolutely life-changing for many. We've had patients as young as 5 choose this option and the pain scale has been rated at .5 out of 10, which equates to being barely noticeable.
