Spending time as a family is essential to cultivate a well-rounded family unit. There are many ways that a family can spend quality time together. One of the best and healthiest ways is strengthening family ties through sports.

While kids should never be forced to do a sport that they aren’t interested in, sharing your own love for sports can build unique relationships with parents and kids from the start. It also gives your children the opportunity to find a sport that they love, as well as being a healthy way to spend a day with the family!

Here’s why we love the idea of bonding as a family through sports.

Parents Can Share Their Passion

Do you get super excited about the Superbowl? Does your partner passionately support their team whenever they play?

Sharing your love for sports with your kids is an excellent way to bond and strengthen family ties. Although your kid may not be as passionate as you about a particular sport, they'll happily take part when they’re younger.

Older kids may become interested in other sports, and then the roles can reverse! You can take an interest in what they’re passionate about and build your relationship even more by sharing in their excitement for their sport.

It Provides an Opportunity to Teach

Doing sports as a family provides a wonderful opportunity for parents to teach their kids new things. Sometimes teaching skills can be a fun way to bond, like tossing a baseball so your kid can get the hang of hitting it.

Other times, teaching lessons like sportsmanship and how to lose gracefully can be a chance to bond and teach life lessons at the same time. Here are some ideas:

  • Teach your kids to swim.

  • Teach your kids to fish and share why you love it.

  • Impress upon your kids what good sportsmanship is about.

  • Learn to dance as a family.

  • Teach your kid to teach others!

It Creates Healthy Habits

There’s nothing wrong with playing PlayStation as a family! But if that’s all you do, it’s a little unbalanced. Taking time to play sports as a family helps to instil healthy habits in your children from the start.

It also provides a less immersive experience that leaves space for talking and catching up with each other, strengthening family relationships.

  • Try to get out and about at least once a week.

  • Take a walk around the block as a family every day.

  • Choose a team sport to do together, like playing tennis doubles or baseball.

  • Help your kids practice their sport in the backyard.

Conclusion

Strengthening family ties through sports is an excellent way to bond and teach your children healthy habits at the same time. In the beginning, it may be you sharing your love for sports with your kids. As they grow, it may become about taking part in their passions.

Either way, sport is a wonderful way to build relationships and strengthen the bonds between family members. It can also be as fun or as serious as you want it to be!
