A recent survey done by Woke Hero founder, Clinical Psychologist Avantika Dixit shows that 59% want to feel better about life, but don’t want to see a therapist. This comes as no surprise to Dixit, which is why Woke Hero was created as an online learning platform to help people bring out their inner greatness.
“Mental health is still stigmatized and means that many people don’t want to see a therapist of any kind, even though having someone to talk with and guide you is an important part of emotional growth and psychological development.” says Dixit.
Here were some other interesting statistics Woke Hero learned:
- 60% feel overwhelmed in life and aren’t sure what to do.
- 51% of people feel they are not living their purpose or potential.
- 71% report needing to improve mental health and overall wellbeing.
- 41% don’t know natural ways to improve mood or mental health.

Why are so many people dissatisfied with at least some aspect of their lives?
The Pandemic has given us the opportunity to take a step back and assess our priorities. Its also brought us in direct contact with our mortality and the finite time we have to pursue meaningful goals and enjoy the experience of life. People have the opportunity to want more from life, and the challenge to overcome the disruption in their careers, relationships, health, finances. There is also the extensive exposure to all the success stories on social media and the obsessive comparison disorder or fear of missing out. Additionally the tech fatigue and accelerated demands from each of the multidimensional roles one plays and the excesses one has allowed to creep in. It all catches up.
What is the hesitancy towards seeing a therapist?
The most common reasons is the high cost investment associated with Therapy. Multiple sessions, affordability, time commitments are seen as barriers. The second most common reason is the psychological barrier of seeing it as sign of failure, shame that one cant cope, denial or reluctance to admit one needs help. The final most common reason is the perception of the typical person who needs therapy as being someone who is pathologically crazy or abnormal.

Why is it important for people to reduce the stigma about seeing a therapist?
This is the age of disruption and its no longer abnormal to have therapy needs. We need to normalize it as an essential part of our overall wellness and effectiveness strategy, not treat it as a shameful sign of failure or break down. The truth is 1 in 3 people is suffering from Anxiety, Depression, Burnout or Panic Disorder right now. These are highly reversible and manageable conditions. Its important to connect people to the appropriate support.

What are some resources for people who may not have the budget for a therapist?
- I would advise anyone that has a health insurance to check if it could cover Therapy, as there have been recent changes in laws governing this. Also check for options to switch to a plan that does.
- Create a support system of care and accountability within your inner circle - speak to your family, friends, mentors honestly about your challenges.
- Check out free or low cost group therapy programs in your community or online. Woke Hero offers highly affordable options as well.
