Music Minute: Paul Winter Summer Solstice Celebration

Seven-time Grammy® winner Paul Winter's 26th annual Summer Solstice Celebration will take place virtually on June 19, 2021 at 4:30 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time from the loft of Paul Winter’s barn in the hills of northwest Connecticut. The concert will be livestreamed, with on-demand video available following the event. Guest artists will be announced in May.

The tradition of this Summer Solstice event was born during the 1990s, in the world’s largest cathedral, New York’s St. John the Divine, where Paul Winter and his ensemble have been artists-in-residence since 1980. The aural-vision was to present a simple, all-acoustic concert to welcome the longest day of the year and the first sunrise of the summer . It was intended to be the polar opposite of the large, theatrical Winter Solstice Celebrations heralding the longest night of the year, which the Paul Winter Consort has presented these many years.

The Cathedral, however, because of the pandemic, has been closed for public performances since March of 2020. Fortunately, Paul’s studio-barn has a cathedralesque loft, which has enabled Paul and his colleagues to continue to perform. They presented three livestream concerts there in 2020: the 25th Annual Summer Solstice Celebration last June, a “Midsummer Morning’s Dream” on August 1st, and their First Annual Autumn Equinox Celebration on September 19th.

“Summer Solstice is one of the great turning points of the year, when the sun is at its peak and the days abound with the promise of life’s fullness. It is a serenely powerful time in which the beauty of the natural world can infuse our spirit, bring us alive to the present, and perhaps awaken a deeper sense of relatedness to the community of life, to the Earth, and to the cosmos,” says Paul Winter. “Our intent, with this concert, is to offer a deep-listening journey in the mystical ambiance of this early morning time. The music begins in total darkness and proceeds in a continuous stream, as the light gradually embraces the sound to carry us into the dawning of the summer.”

The Summer Solstice music will follow in the path of Paul Winter’s newest album, Light of the Sun, which was inspired by his belief in music’s unique ability to enable us to remember and resonate with our awesome journey with the Sun, and by his conviction that the listening faculty is the gateway to the deeper instincts of our human nature.

Paul Winter’s soprano sax will be heard in this concert with a unique “summer consort” ensemble. The guest musicians will be announced in May.

The livestream video will feature footage of the early morning landscape during the first part of the concert when the musicians are playing in darkness. Paul Winter invites nature enthusiasts, photographers, and videographers alike to submit footage for use in the program, on the theme of “Morning Essence.”

From the early days of his college jazz sextet, which toured 23 countries of Latin America for the State Department and performed the first-ever jazz concert at the White House for the Kennedys in 1962, to his later ensemble, the Paul Winter Consort, Paul Winter’s concert tours and recording expeditions have taken him to 52 countries and to wilderness areas on six continents, where he has traveled on rafts, dog sleds, mules, kayaks, tugboats and Land Rovers. He has recorded over 50 albums, of which seven have been honored with Grammy® Awards.
