Website Spotlight: Mayv

I recently had a chance to learn about Mayv – the first integrative and digital chronic pain relief system with customized, holistic treatments, such as breathing, meditation and yoga in conjunction with CBD products to help individuals live pain free lives.

Oftentimes moms put themselves last but Mayv wants women of all ages to put their mental and physical well-being FIRST so they can show up as the best version of themselves each day for their loved ones. With the purchase of Mayv’s CBD products (starting at $55), mom will receive complimentary and unlimited access to the pain relief application and online resource center.

With most chronic pain and autoimmune diseases, it starts presenting symptoms in women around their 20’s or 30’s (just about when they’re starting to have children; so, this is very fitting and something women shouldn’t ignore). A non-opioid, therapeutic solution, Mayv aims to transform the way people live with chronic pain. Science backs the benefits of CBD for pain, but how does one go about taking CBD?  Many are lost about the process and lack the information necessary which can be very confusing. That is where Mayv steps in. The company guides customers through the pain treatment cycle with CBD by providing patient-centric technology and content, science-backed integrative therapies, digital pain relief tools, education, invigorating classes, and a community of users all included in one platform when purchasing any of their CBD products.

Mayv organic hemp is hand-harvested in western Colorado at Needle Rock Farms. In order to produce the best hemp and reduce their impact on the land, Mayv is committed to sustainable farming methods, exclusively using CO2 extraction to distill the cleanest and most potent CBD and terpene blend. Testing happens throughout the extraction process to ensure customers receive the highest quality product.

I had a chance to interview Co-founder Fahed Al-Essa to learn more.

  • Why was Mayv created?
    • Set to transform the way people live with chronic pain, Mayv, a digital holistic chronic pain solution that targets the major aggravators of pain, stress and inflammation, launched this month. Founded by Fahed Al-Essa and Stephen Simon, the company uses a non-opioid, therapeutic approach to help those experiencing chronic pain take charge of their own healing, reduce pain, improve psychological well-being (as most pain sufferers also deal with severe depression), and boost immunity with patient-centric technology and content. Mayv is plant-based hemp products, science-backed integrative therapies, digital pain relief tools, education, invigorating classes, and a community of users. The side effects of COVID-19 are also increasing the chronic pain population, and the current American healthcare system is ill-prepared to handle the rapidly growing patient population. As it is, seventy million (or 1 in 5) Americans live with chronic pain. The current medical system’s approach is also dependent on medications and surgery that focus on short term gains with detrimental long-term repercussions. Today’s success rate of surgeries for chronic back pain is only at 22%, and the U.S. is the only nation with an opioid epidemic, consuming 80% of the world’s opioid prescriptions.

This is where Mayv comes in: the first comprehensive, integrative digital solution for chronic pain patients, who may suffer from a wide range of debilitating conditions. The founders (who live with chronic conditions) noticed a big gap in the healthcare system. Although many conventional medical treatments improve lives, mental and emotional care aren’t considered to be on equal footing with cellular and biological medicine. Chronic pain can’t be neatly solved with a single pill or surgery, and patients' lives are often changed when both the mind and body are harnessed in the healing process. The founders combined their firsthand experiences as pain patients, extensive background in business administration, biotech and public health, and their previous jobs in the healthcare industry to finally launch Mayv: a holistic approach to empower their community of chronic pain warriors, helping individuals to rediscover their resilience, take control of their care, and explore mind-body therapies that tackle root causes of pain.

Al-Essa and Simon carefully paired specific supplements for inflammation with a digital companion that debunks the myths and mistakes surrounding holistic treatments for pain. The result is a cost-effective, alternative solution to functional medicine centers that are pricey and hard to travel to, especially during a global pandemic. The company provides unbiased, science-back guidance to complementary medicine, gives control back to the patient, and puts everything all in one place in an accessible and affordable system.

“In addition to personally suffering from chronic pain over the last 20 years from a broken femur and three unsuccessful surgeries, my mom was diagnosed with five consecutive and different cancers over the span of five years,” said Co-founder Al-Essa. “The medical treatment was great but lacked attention to the mental and emotional toll chronic diagnoses take on patients. Her emotional wellbeing was deteriorating, and it was disheartening to see. I knew I had to take action to create a better approach to pain management that was more receptive to patients’ needs and adaptive to their goals; that’s how Mayv was born,” he adds. When Al-Essa started his thesis exploring how cannabinoids can help patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis, for his Master of Public Health, he started uncovering the patients’ perceived needs, the rampant depression amongst this population, and the lack of attention the medical system gives this patient population. He quickly pivoted his research to “How can we re-imagine chronic joint care?” which resulted in a patient centered approach that doesn’t try to fit patients into boxes but allows them to discover the mix of therapies that works for them.

  • What is the research behind CBD and why does it work?
    • CBD and the other 100 cannabinoids in the hemp/cannabis plant regulate the body's balance or homeostasis through the endocannabinoid system. It affects all organs and systems but has a very short half-life so has not been discovered until recent history.
    • CBD particularly is famed for its anti-inflammatory properties that help with inflammation, anxiety and has been touted to help patients sleep. A lot is anecdotal, but research is catching up to prove what patients are saying all along.
    • The most amazing recent research is pointing towards reduced opioid use.

  • Why is it important for people to consider holistic pain management, even if they don't choose Mayv?
    • First I always start by saying: we want your wellness first. Whether it's our products or someone else's we want you to be healthy and well. We built Mayv because we saw a gap and we wanted to simplify the process for us chronic warriors.
    • Second, we are holistic beings. Our digestive system does not work in isolation to our brain nor our eyes. We are cohesive in design and so should the way we approach treatment. Our body's health is on equal footing as our mental health and they both affect one another
    • What a holistic approach does is allow the space and time to understand what the patient’s lived experience is and allows them to try and find what mix of therapies and approaches works for them.
    • At Mayv we allow patients to choose their journey and which modules they want to engage with: whether its nutrition, tai-chi, yoga, self-compassion It’s their choice. The idea here is allow autonomy, because only with choice do, we actually adhere to therapies.
      • I always relate this to my mom telling my dad to stop eating for the last 30 years, which think has made only made him eat more in stubborn disregard. Yet he made a choice on his own during covid to start walking. A choice he made and kept.
      • Change has to come from within, and choice allows ownership over their own journey. At mayv we give patients the reign to guide their personalized holistic journey at scale.
