Healthy Habits: Ask the Experts

Planned Parenthood is excited to premiere its new ‘Ask the Experts’ video series — with engaging, straight-talking hosts who answer common questions young people have about sex, sexual health, and their bodies. The videos feature shame-free, gender-inclusive, age-appropriate information and bold, fun graphics.

For more than 10 years, Planned Parenthood experts have answered hundreds of young people’s questions on everything from their bodies to birth control through the trusted and popular online Ask the Experts Q&A series. The new video series, presented in both English and Spanish, and available on YouTube, breaks down health facts and fiction using colorful, inclusive visuals and provides straightforward answers to some of the common questions sex education experts have received over the years, including:

  • On what day of my period can I start taking my birth control pill?
  • How do I stop ejaculating too fast?
  • Does pulling out always work? Can I still get pregnant?
  • How long does it take to get pregnant after sex?
  • Can I have sex while I’m on my period? And can I get pregnant during my period?

Dr. Sara C. Flowers, vice president of education and training, Planned Parenthood Federation of America

“Young people deserve resources that teach them about their bodies, sex, and sexual health in a way that’s straightforward, speaks to their experiences, and is relevant to their identity, sexuality, relationships, and culture. We’re proud to introduce our new ‘Ask the Experts’ video series, which is packed with information teens want to know about how their bodies work, so they can make the healthiest decisions for themselves. Using inclusive language and medically accurate information — free of shame and euphemisms — these videos meet a critical need for young people.”

Every young person deserves sex education that honors all of who they are, their experiences, and their own vision for their futures. With the availability and quality of sex education programs still wildly inconsistent across the U.S. — if it’s provided at all — too many young people still aren’t getting the information and skills they need for a lifetime of good health. Now more than ever, young people need access to information and skills necessary to understand their bodies, define their boundaries, protect their health, and shape their futures. Planned Parenthood’s “Ask the Experts” videos are designed to reach young people where they are with answers to their questions and expert advice to keep them well-informed and healthy. The next two topics in the series will be “How many holes do I have down there?” and “How can I tell when my partner is having an orgasm”?

As a leading expert in sexual and reproductive health, Planned Parenthood is always looking for innovative approaches to get people the sex education and care they need to stay healthy and reach their life goals — whether that’s on their phones or in a health center. Through online content like the “Ask the Experts” video series, Planned Parenthood can reach young people who don’t get sex education in school, or who need to supplement the programs they do get.

The new “Ask the Experts” video series joins Planned Parenthood’s growing library of YouTube videos for young people, which include modeling healthy communication around consent and safer sex and STIs. Other resources, like the sex education chatbot Roo and the Chat/Text program, let young people confidentially ask questions about their health and get personalized answers and resources. And, as always, people of all ages can find information and submit their questions on Planned Parenthood’s TumblrTwitterFacebook, and Instagram pages.
