Summer break for kids is around the corner, a period when parents oftentimes need to make plans to keep the kiddos entertained. However, entertainment is oftentimes synonymous with spending money, but parents can learn easy tips that will not burn through their wallets and keep the kids entertained.
Here are some tips from Monifi (a goal-based banking free app that has financial goals at the core of the experience) for saving money this summer while the kids have fun:
Food
One of the biggest expenses for families can be food and groceries, however is a controllable expense. Dining out might be easy to do, but it comes at an expense. The summer is a great time to get kids involved in meal planning, meal prep and grocery list development. Pack the freezer with ice cream and other items your kids enjoy eating to avoid having to go out often and incur additional costs.
Visit your local library
The library can serve both as an entertainment and learning place. Browse with the kids through their DVD and CD collection for free. There’s even an app called Libby that allows you to download e-books and audiobooks using your library card.
Seek low-cost school activities
Find out if your local schools offer any low-cost entertainment option during the summer. Scouts, sports and other extracurricular groups are often available for minimal or no fees. Schools with pay-to-play sports teams will always be less expensive than signing on with a traveling team or other sports league. With the ongoing pandemic however, be prepared to find primarily virtual types of programs available versus face-to-face.
Take advantage of your neighborhood parks
Remember that kids do not require any special equipment or schedule to have a good time. Parents prefer structured activities, but parks and playgrounds are many times overlooked even though they are free resources for kids to get to play and socialize without paying a ton of money. Try to also find trails, river walks and nature centers where children can enjoy themselves outside for free.
Sign up for online community groups
Look for online communities where you might be able to learn about neighborhood outdoor events. It’s a great resource to stay up to date with local events happening in your area.
