Healthy Habits: Self-Care For You and Your Family

Practicing self-care is a life lesson that can benefit your mental, emotional, and physical well-being for as long as you commit to it. It’s not just about buying a new outfit or dining at a new fancy restaurant — though they can certainly help!

Self-care, at its core, is about taking time to identify and address your needs. It looks different for every person and may even change over time. For some people, self-care is meal prepping so they have an extra hour every evening to spend with their kids instead of cooking. Others enjoy getting their hair done so they can look and feel their best.

It’s good to schedule self-care as a solo activity so you have the time and space to reconnect with yourself in the present moment. Take time each week to journal about how you’re feeling, set goals for your growth, or write a gratitude list for a positive boost to your day.

Of course, you can also celebrate self-care together. A walk in the park allows your family to exercise together, breathe fresh air, and take in all of the wellness benefits of nature. A family game night with phones and gadgets turned off, a spa day with friends, or a visit to the local library can all serve you and those you care about most.

Practicing self-care as a family lets you set the example that your needs and well-being are important. Choose a time and date to practice self-care and brainstorm a list of things you can do together. Take inspiration from these affordable ways to pamper yourself, then choose a new practice to try each week.

You and your family will benefit individually while enjoying quality time together. Just don’t forget to enjoy your individual self-care, too.
