Frank de las Mercedes has created free downloadable posters to bring awareness to a really important issue affecting many Nicaraguans and their families. In April of 2018 massive “autoconvocado” social protests, took place across Nicaragua with hundreds of thousands of Nicaraguans taking part in demonstrations against the corruption of the Ortega-Murillo government. The peaceful protests led to the deaths of over 320 people, most of them civilians gunned down by Sandinista police and pro-government paramilitaries. The regime’s deadly response to those protests has escalated into political repression of civil rights and violation of the Nicaraguan people’s human and constitutional rights. During these last few weeks, the dictatorship has shut down all acts of dissent, ordering the arrest and detention of potential opposition candidates in the scheduled November 2021 elections, students, civil society activists and leaders. Indeed, many of the detained presidential candidates have been charged with “treason” and their whereabouts remain unknown. This has continued with very little US media and policy attention.
If you want to learn more, you can watch this video by the Woodrow Wilson Center. Frank de las Mercedes has created these posters as a vehicle for much needed awareness and want to make clear that to me this is not a political issue but a human rights issue. You can download posters to share as well.
