Thrifty Thinking: 3 Steps to Getting Your Finances Organized as a Busy Mom

From carpool pickup to daily meals and chores, life as a mom can be stressful and very busy. This is particularly true for working moms or single mothers who have an additional load on their plate every day. By getting your finances in order, you’ll be better able to pay bills on time, stress less, and focus more on what matters most.

There are many ways to get organized. Some people prefer to be more systematic and follow a list, while others prefer to set specific goals and work on accomplishing those first. Organizing can be a daunting task, so it’s important to understand what methods work best for you. Look through the Enneagram chart below to get a better sense of what to focus on while organizing.

Once you understand what to focus on based on your Enneagram type, follow these three simple steps:

1. Establish an Effective Bill Paying System

Keeping track of when every bill is due can be tedious and time-consuming. By setting up automatic payments, you won’t have to worry about remembering to pay certain bills at different times throughout the month. This is one of the most effective ways to organize your bill-paying system.

If you can’t set up automatic payments on all your bills, consider marking the day they need to be paid on a calendar you look at often. Likewise, it can be helpful to set up reminders in your phone.

2. Gather All Your Financial Documents

Knowing exactly where all of your important financial documents are can alleviate stress in times of emergency. When gathering your documents, make sure to put all of your paper in one place, and all your digital files in one place.

If you want to go above and beyond, consider scanning all of your financial documents, putting them on a hard drive, and locking the hard drive safely away.

3. Use a Finance App

With so many different account balances to keep track of, using a finance app can be greatly beneficial. Many finance apps even have graphs and other additional features that can help you track your net worth.

Getting your finances organized can have tremendous benefits. Rather than feeling stressed over your money situation and confused by what needs to be done, you’ll be able to rest easy knowing you have things under control. You may also find you have more time to focus on your kids and their needs.
