Amazing Art: Nature Painting in Watercolor and The Art of Paint Marbling

My daughter does more sketching than painting, but I do like giving her art books in other disciplines so she can stretch her creativity in new ways. I was happy to get the following two books to review.

In Nature Painting in Watercolor, the focus is on the plants that exist in nature. It includes ferns, leaves, trees, and flowers (as well as some animals). There's a good introduction to the tools and materials needed for watercolor, and then there are plenty of examples and explanations of techniques, appropriate for both beginning artists and those with a little more experience. It even includes washes, glazes, cover washes, and detail. This is great for anyone who likes watercolor (or wants to learn more) and enjoys an excuse to spend more time outside.

My daughter has wanted to try marbling, so The Art of Paint Marbling was a great book for her. The book is a follow-up to two books about paint pouring, and looks specifically at the marbling technique. I thought this was an intriguing technique, and it's well-written even for beginners like me, but also provided something new and different for my more experienced daughter to try out. Paper, paint, and water combine to create beautiful patterns, and the element of the unexpected adds a little bit of unpredictability to the art that is fun!
