As parents and caregivers, we often default to disciplining our kids the way we were disciplined. While many of us grew up in loving homes, not all of us did - and sometimes the things the adults in our lives did weren't best practices, even if they were making the best choices they could at the time, just because research adds to what we know about development.
I recently had the chance to review High Five Discipline - Positive Parenting for Happy, Healthy, Well-Behaved Kids. This book is written by mother and practicing pediatrician Candice Jones, MD, FAAP. It's a positive parenting guide you can trust - Dr. Jones has the knowledge from her medical training and the practical application experience from being a parent herself. It helps parents understand child development and how discipline can shape behavior and overall health and well-being.
The information about children's development is presented in a clear, well-researched way, yet is still comprehensible regardless of your background in science or psychology. She makes a compelling case for creating a family discipline plan that encourages good behavior while managing misbehavior. Hot topics include tantrums, sibling squabbles, and developmentally appropriate rewards.
The book is appropriate for parents and caregivers at nearly any stage of life. Even if you've been caring for children for a while, it never hurts to get some new tips from someone who knows what they're talking about!
Candice W. Jones, MD, FAAP, is a board certified, practicing pediatrician, spokesperson for the American Academy of Pediatrics, and host of the podcast KIDing Around with Dr. Candice. She is the mother of two children and lives near Orlando, Florida.
