Healthy Habits: Tips to Boost Energy and Beauty

The Emmys are almost here! We now get to experience all the glamour and excitement award season has to offer, but many are still struggling with the pandemic which has left us feeling depleted, overwhelmed or just not our best.

Los Angeles based Nora Tobin, performance enhancement and executive coach, nutrition specialist, model, and CEO of Nora’s Naturals coffee, knows how to keep celebrities and top executives happy and healthy. Nora’s Naturals Coffee is part of the DPA pre-awards gifting suite for the Emmys, and was previously part of the DPA pre-awards gifting suite for the Oscars as well.

“Whether mentally or physically taxed, cortisol (the stress hormone) rises. This can have a cascade effect on the delicate balance of the hormone triangle. In order to keep up with the demands, cortisol stays elevated and pulls from other sources to maintain the same energy. The body pulls from the adrenals (responsible for weight management) and estrogen/testosterone (responsible for sex drive). As you can see, high levels of stress can make it a challenge to lose weight or feel optimal energy,” says Nora Tobin.

Here are Nora’s top tips to negate the effects of stress, elevate energy and boost beauty- both inside and out to stay Hollywood Healthy!

Beauty Tip #1: Increase Quality Sleep
Deep sleep is the optimal repair for cellular beauty, skin elasticity and complexion. During sleep, the glymphatic system turns on (95% active at night), sends cerebral spinal fluid through the brain, clearing out plaque and toxins that are built up during the day. Deep sleep also balances leptin and ghrelin (hunger hormones), speeds cellular turnover and increases fat burning by dropping insulin levels. A couple quick ways to improve sleep:

  • Set room temperature below 68 degrees
  • Take magnesium before bed
  • Spend a couple minutes in a yoga child’s pose position
  • Place black tape on any light in the room
  • Shift screens to grey mode or use blue light glasses

Beauty Tip #2: Use a Coffee Scrub
Quality coffee keeps us energized, but also has amazing beauty benefits. Combine coffee grounds with coconut oil and brown sugar. Use it as a scrub in the shower for exfoliation. The coffee grounds will remove dead skin cells, stimulate circulation and minimize the appearance of cellulite. The caffeine can also help to tighten skin. When applied under the eyes, the caffeine reduces puffiness.

Fitness Tip #1: Up the Intervals
High intensity interval training can be characterized as applying speed to any exercise in a very short period of time. For example, perform squats or pushups as fast as possible for 30 seconds, with 10 seconds rest between. Repeat for eight rounds. You can also apply the same technique to any type of cardio activity. Interval training raises excess post oxygen consumption- burning calories for up to 24 hours after the workout. It’s one of the most efficient workouts to burn fat efficiently in a short period of time.

Fitness Tip #2: Lie With Legs Up The Wall
When we are in a stressed state, the body holds onto fat to protect itself. No matter how many workouts we accomplish, if there’s not a balance of the stress response, we won’t see the positive effects. One simple way to negate the effects of stress is by lying with legs up the wall. This position shifts the body into the parasympathetic nervous system, allowing for a calm focused state. By incorporating this position after a workout or in the midst of a day that feels stressful, we can create optimal repair and fat burning efficiency.

Mindset Tip #1: Incorporate the 3-5 Breaths
In the midst of this exciting time of year, it can actually be a challenge to stay in the moment. There’s a great deal of preparation, and then the experience has a tendency to fly by. In order to drop into the experience, it can be helpful to practice the 3-5 breaths. Simply inhale for a 3 count, hold breath, then exhale for a 5 count. It is a technique that shifts the body into the parasympathetic state- allowing for focus and clarity of thought. It’s a practice that can be done anywhere, even walking the red carpet.

Mindset Tip #2: Listen to Binaural Beats
Everyone has worked so hard to get to this point, now it is time to just enjoy. It can be hard to switch gears and slow down the pace. One great way to create presence is through binaural beats. These tones calm the amygdala (part of the brain that stimulates anxiety) and stimulates the hypothalamus (part of the brain responsible for attention). There are a number of binaural playlists on spotify with specific themes- creativity, sleep, concentration, stress relief. Play these while getting ready, sitting in an uber or for a few minutes first thing in the morning.
