Trick or Treat? Why not both! It’s no surprise that food is one of the most powerful motivators for dogs, making it a great tool for obedience training.
When used correctly (and not too often), treats can be an effective way to help communicate with your dog and give them proper guidance.
Cesar Millan shares his tips on giving tricks for treats:
>> DON’T BRIBE YOUR DOG
Using treats is a great way to start training and grab your dog’s attention, but you’ll want them to be able to perform without the incentive too. Instead of only treats, make sure to give your dog reinforcement with affection and verbal praise! You can then begin relying on treats less and less by using them the first few times, then making the same hand gesture or demand without the treat.
>> REWARD EVERY SMALL STEP
Training is hard, and every dog is different. Many pet owners make the mistake of only rewarding after their dog has performed the entire task. If it’s taking a long time for your dog to grasp a new trick, try breaking it down into smaller steps and rewarding after every step is completed.
>> USE TINY TREATS
It’s easy to overdo it with treats, especially when training, but it’s not healthy for your dog to over reward by overfeeding. Help to ensure that your dog is not getting too many special snacks by using smaller treats or break off pieces.
