Fun Freetime: Popongo

Popongo was created by Denver resident Errol Anderson. During the first summer of the pandemic, Errol was determined to create a new game that allowed for social distancing but could provide more fun and increased energy than the games currently on the market! Thus, the ideation for Popongo was born.

The game is typically played outdoors but can be played inside as well. It’s the perfect addition to spice up parties, movie nights and more this holiday season.

I had a chance to interview the creator to learn more.

What was the inspiration behind Popongo?

During the COVID-19 pandemic, my friends and I planned a backyard gathering to get out of the house and enjoy each other’s company while practicing social distancing. Wanting to provide a fun activity for my friends, I purchased the most popular outdoor/lawn game thinking it would give us with an afternoon of fun. But, after only a few rounds, everyone seemed bored of the game, and I realized that there was a need for better lawn game options. After some research, I noticed this industry was lacking and decided to dedicate my time to developing a new game that would appeal to the masses and provide more fun than what was currently available.

I was on a mission to develop a game that would be more exciting, challenging and engaging for anyone who plays. My goal was to create a game that was just as fun to watch as it was to play. This was the beginning of the conceptualization of Popongo. Wanting to celebrate the Jamaican culture, African roots, and Caribbean pride, I decided to include the colors of the Jamaican flag, red for Africa and blue for the beautiful Caribbean skies and ocean waters in Popongo’s design.

Why is it important for families to have family games that appeal to everyone?

It is important to provide an activity that can be enjoyed by everyone in the family, no matter how young or old, because it helps bring people together. That’s the amazing thing about Popongo, it’s engaging for everyone without sacrificing the challenge and game strategy, so participants of any age can compete and even people on the sidelines can join in the fun. Popongo is a game night staple that can be played indoors or outdoors, providing hours of fun for all generations.
