I recently had a chance to interview Dr. Melanie Icard on ideas for practicing daily self-care rituals, and the importance of them, in the New Year. Dr. Icard is a naturopathic medical doctor with a focus on female health.
She shares the following info:
- Tips and ideas for creating a self-care routine in 2022. Some examples include: stretching and meditation, gratitude journaling, taking care of your body by using a lymph brush, oils, and baths, feeding your mind and spirit, and practicing self-compassion.
- Exercise as a part of your self-care routine. Going to the gym is not only for your fitness but also for the feel-good hormones and moving stagnant energy. Workouts help to balance hormones such as cortisol, insulin, thyroid hormones, and sex hormones.
- De-stigmatizing shame of wanting to take care of your body. American’s constantly face the pressure to be “on” and “in go mode”. It is important to turn our brains off, relax and find downtime as a way to reduce the everyday stressors of life.

Why is self-care often overlooked, especially in the winter?
I think the holidays although are very wonderful with the special family time together, can be a little overwhelming and it gets people out of their regular routine. Taking care of ourselves needs to be a habit; it needs to be something that we do everyday and on bigger levels at least weekly, like a massage or meditation class. In my opinion busyness is the number one issue with keeping on track with self care in the winter.
Why is it important to emphasize the importance of self-care?
Self care just makes you feel good and when you feel good your energy is good your emotions are good your mind's good and you can navigate through life easily and enjoy it. Everything is energy, so all the good energy you put into yourself will have positive benefits throughout your life.
How can people avoid feeling guilty for taking care of their own mental or physical health?
There's lots of scientific evidence that meditating or healthy practices like massage or Qigong or art are beneficial to your physical and mental health.
And if you're a mom or a caretaker or in some kind of leadership position the better that you feel the higher vibration that you put off and it's going to benefit everyone around you.
How do people need to adjust self-care as they age?
As we age we need to take even better care of ourselves. We need to take more care into the foods that we put into our body making sure that they're healthy. We can't get away with not stretching and not taking care of our physical bodies. If you really listen to your body you will feel it is not liking unhealthy things you put into your body such as; drinking alcohol or eating heavy fast food or dessert.
As women age we have less hormones and that affects a lot of things in our mental, emotional and physical health. I definitely recommend going to see a naturopathic doctor and getting your body and your hormones into balance. For taking care of urinary control and our female area I love the Femiwave treatment which is effective with no pain and no down time. With a simple non-invasive procedure we can get our female area tuned up, get our urinary control back and feel more confident.
