I recently had a chance to interview Paw & Order Dog Trainer, Elissa Weimer-Sentner about the ways that getting your dog trained could actually save you money.
Elissa has spent over 10 years mastering her dog training program and has witnessed first hand the way lives are changed with well-trained dogs. Here are a few ways dog owners can save money by getting their dog trained:
- The American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen certification can reduce insurance rates
- Some homeowner’s insurances offer reduced rates for having a CGC certified dog
- Training is way less expensive than a lawsuit (especially for any dogs showing aggression)
- Being a proactive dog owner and getting proper training can save thousands, should a lawsuit ever be filed as a result of an aggressive attack.
- Less home repairs from unruly dogs
- Destructive dogs can cause a lot of damage to property, furniture, clothes, etc. But having a well trained dog would essentially eliminate those extra frequent costs of having to buy or repair things.
You can learn more in this interview.
Why can it be beneficial for families with pets to pay for dog training?
While you can find a bunch of information online on how to train your dog, nothing comes close to actually having someone show you personally and develop a plan totally customized to your dog and your family situation/goals. There is so much information out there that it can become overwhelming and most advice given online is not good advice. If you want to do dog training right, put in the investment to make sure your dog is trained correctly. You will have your dog for a long time. The money you spend for dog training now will pay for itself over and over again in the long run, I promise you. A dog trainer is much cheaper than buying all new furniture, vet bills from your dog accidentally ingesting something, or a lawsuit from your dog hurting someone.
How can it actually save pet owners money in the long run?
You will save noney on your vet bills (dog won’t get into things he/she shouldn’t). You can also save money from not having to buy new furniture or belongings (shoes, remotes, reading glasses etc). Hiring a good trainer the first time will also save you money from buying online courses or having to hire multiple dog trainers that are cheaper. Also, if your dog ends up biting someone or knocking someone over, you may end up with medical bills or a lawsuit down the road.
How can families find trainers that are reputable and mesh well with their own pet and personalities?
Read reviews! How reputable are the trainers around you? What do they specialize in? If you are looking for a pet dog trainer who comes to your home, you may not want to work with someone who only specializes in trick training or sport work. Would your dog benefit from a solid board and train immersion training? If so, does the trainer offer that service? Find a trainer that isn’t afraid to show results! I would suggest you look at the personal dogs of the dog trainer you are considering. How well behaved are their dogs? Another very important thing to consider is what methods the trainer uses? Find a trainer that is willing to adapt and adjust techniques if something isn’t working with your dog. The more techniques your dog trainer knows, the more successful you will be, because that trainer has the knowledge to adapt on the fly in so many situations to meet your goals.
