February is American Heart Health Month, but our nation’s youth often learn their health habits (or lack thereof) from their parents. In a new study, Lurie Children’s Hospital explored the influence parenting decisions have on children’s overall heart health and lifestyles.
Highlights include:
- 55% of parents admit they are not a good role model for limiting sedentary behavior
- 35% of parents admit they’re not healthy role models for nutritious eating
- 51% of parents say high-sugar snacks are as serious a health risk to their children as smoking, yet 68% admit to using food as a reward for their kids, and 39% use food to leverage certain behaviors
- 56% of parents say they were more active as a child than their children currently are, and nearly 3-in-4 say they only do “vigorous” physical activities as a family a few times, or less, a month
