I recently had the chance to review two great new books from The Quarto Group. The first was Creative Acrylics. Acrylics are versatile, affordable, and accessible, and this book does a great job of outlining a variety of techniques. It includes blending colors, building texture, glazing, brushwork, and tips for specific subjects like still life, florals, and animals. It also touches on using different surfaces besides traditional canvas to create beautiful works of art that are functional and unique. The tips are easy to follow, the book has ample illustrations to show off the techniques, and it's a great resource for beginners or those looking for a few more techniques.Mindful Artist: Birds and Botanicals was also great, with tips, techniques, and step-by-step projects for working mindfully with Japanese ink and brush pens. This was an artmedium that my daughter hadn't tried yet, but she was able to create lovely artwork with natural motifs - birds, plants, etc. It mixes meditation with art, and includes black and color art projects. It's somehow both contemporary and traditional, and was a fun, relaxing art form to learn about!
