I recently had a chance to review a civil rights book for kids that also works as a guide for parents - Civil Rights Then and Now: A Timeline of the Fight for Equality in America.
The book presents facts, biographies, and stories of great civil rights leaders in a well-organized way with a kid-friendly look and solid information. There is a little bit of editorializing, but it serves as more explanatory than anything else. It's perfect for educators and homeschool families, or just families who want to encourage more discussion, because it also includes vocabulary lists, comprehension and discussion questions, and writing prompts.
I definitely learned things from this book. There were very well-known figures from history and more recent stories, as well as some people I hadn't heard of. It's not a pushy, confrontational book, but it is very clear about what happened in the past, so it's suitable for families of any background who want to learn more about civil rights.
