I recently had a chance to review Marjorie Liu's middle grade debut, Wingbearer.
The book follows Zuli, who has only ever known the safety of the Great Tree and the bird spirits around her. But an evil force threatens the magic of the tree, and Zuli, along with her guardian owl Frowly, needs to stop in. There are all of the great elements of a young adult fantasy - magic, forming new companionships, a dragon, a witch queen, and, of course, the transformation that goes along with a question. Zuli is a strong, inspiring character for any reader, but especially provides a positive literary role model for girls and people of color. My teen girl really enjoyed this book. She loves fantasy stories in general, and especially enjoyed the courage displayed by Zuli.
