Here’s some math humor for you: Why is the obtuse triangle always so frustrated? Because it is never right!
World Math Day takes place every year on March 23. It’s an annual global holiday where students are encouraged to solve mental math problems, find uses of math in their everyday lives, and utilize online games and platforms to enhance their skill sets in the subject.
Brainly, the largest online homework help community, has firsthand insight into the average American child's relationship with math. Despite the love/hate relationship many people seem to have with the subject, according to a survey of 900 American students conducted by Brainly, math ranks #1 in students’ favorite subjects:
When asked to select their favorite subject in school, students answered:
- Math (26.4%)
- Science (20.3%)
- English (20.1%)
- Social Studies or History (18%)
- Other (15.2%)
The top 5 states where math is students’ favorite subject:
- New Jersey (41.7%)
- Massachusetts (41.6%)
- New Hampshire (37.6%)
- Maryland (36.5%)
- New York (36.2%)
Over the last year, 1.3 million math answers have been shared on Brainly US, and 41% of answers shared so far this year are math. To address these questions, Brainly created Math Solver, an online feature focused specifically on providing step-by-step solutions to complex math problems (please see further information at the end of this email).
Brainly's survey also yielded some surprising other insights about math, how often and when Americans use it, and what they think about it. Here are some highlights:
- 88% of parents believe math is taught differently today than it was when they were in school
- 64% of students say they struggle while trying to concentrate on difficult math homework
- Nearly 75% of adults say they use at least some form of math on a daily basis
- 92% of Americans agree math is important
The most common everyday uses of math for Americans are managing finances (51%) and shopping for the best price (23%). Other common everyday uses include calculating tips at restaurants (11%), cooking with recipes (8%), home management such as repairs, landscaping, or decorating (4%), and health including exercise and dieting (3%).
When it comes to students' favorite types of math classes, algebra tops the list with 54%. The other top-ranking math classes are geometry (28%) and statistics (12%). Calculus (4%) and Trigonometry (2%) ranked as students' least favorite types of math classes.
In order to help instill a love for math, Brainly has some tips to help parents get their kids excited about the core subject:
- POINT OUT THE MATH IN EVERYDAY LIFE. From asking how many cups of milk are needed when baking a cake, to how much time left they have in a video game, showing your child that they're doing math while they're doing something they enjoy will help them recognize that math is absolutely everywhere.
- LEARN NEW MATH SKILLS. Support your child by taking the time to learn supplementary or complementary math skillsets. Even if you can't help with their homework, the perseverance they'll see from you will strengthen their own work ethic, which will be valuable in their lives.
- BUY A CONVERSION CHART. It’s an easy way to ingrain the conversion tables of kilometers to miles, grams to ounces, or liters to gallons. They're skills that don’t come up often, but are extremely handy to know.
