Book Nook: Two Ships

I recently had a chance to read a historical fiction book set in the time of the Thirty Years' War, when the Protestant Reformation has split Europe into Protestant and Catholic. In Two Ships, Piotr Nowak and Jana Mueller find themselves on boats headed for America when each of their respective families are caught up in the violence.

It's not a historical time period that I often read books from, so it was quite interesting to read something different. At the beginning of the book, the author spends quite a bit of time with each of their individual stories, then as they get closer to meeting, switches back and forth more quickly. While Piotr and Jana have some very big differences in the way they ended up in the New World, both of them are learning to survive without their family and finding their place in the world.

I actually wasn't super interested in the book in the beginning, but I still kept reading and finished in one night. Now, I'm intrigued by the planned sequel, and look forward to its release! I'm glad I kept reading even though I wasn't as interested in the story at first, because as the story progressed it got more and more interesting.

Two Ships is, at its core, a story of coming of age in the face of adversity, and the author does a good job setting this in the context of events hundreds of years ago.

About the Author

James Redwood grew up in Delaware County, Ohio. He spent the summer days of his youth running through the forest and farm fields surrounding his family home. He has an undergraduate degree in Education from Bowling Green State University and a master’s degree in Special Education from Ashland University. His career as a teacher focused on teaching reading and writing to students with dyslexia and dysgraphia. His knowledge in the field of literacy, and a fondness for storytelling, led to an irresistible urge to write Two Ships. The follow-up, One House, is in the works, as is a book of short stories. When he is not writing, he enjoys spending time with his wife of 27 years, Deborah, and their three children. A walk in the woods is still his favorite escape.
