Healthy Habits: Butt Acne

Zits on the butt. While they are not immediately visible, like that pimple in the middle of your forehead looking like a third eye, they are problematic. Painful, prone to infection, and difficult to pop. The reason for them may not be anyone's fault. But it probably is.

Butt acne is caused by excess skin oil or when glands go overdrive and get infected. If it is an inflamed raised bump, it is most likely cystic acne. But why?

  1. What causes butt acne? Underwear that’s too big.

Ill-fitting underwear, scooted around on all day and exacerbated by sedentary lifestyles, leads to friction and irritation. Anything that causes friction can cause irritation and that may result in folliculitis. “Underwear that does not fit, especially if it’s too big, certainly irritates me,” said SwampButt Underwear spokesman and guy who always overshares, Nick Heraldson. “For shorts that are too big, try pulling them up over the outside of your pants. With any luck, your shirt tail will cover it.”

2. What causes butt acne? Underwear that’s too small.

Remembering that with bug underwear comes the friction that leads to irritation may clog hair pores. Tight or underwear that is too small can do the same thing. Super small shorts will all but factory seal sweat, dirt, and oil deep into your butt skin, smushing it all down into pores with no escape. “It’s a combination that is bad enough by itself but remember what else is going on down at the exit,” Heraldson said. “The result is a stew of germs and filth that can lead to infections, disease, bad smells, and a limited social life,” Heraldson said. “Acne just might be the best outcome here, and that is bad.”

Some people sweat a lot for no good reason or a medical one. Here is an article on Hexels Hyperhydrosis.

3. What causes butt acne? Sweaty underwear, gym clothes.

After completing a workout, mowing the lawn, or sitting in the bleachers all afternoon, sweaty peeps might consider just air drying on the way home. Bad idea. If possible, shower and change into clean clothes. “It’s also a bad idea for anyone to change their underwear in public and believe me, inside the car counts as out in public. At least that’s what the judge told me," Heraldson remembered. "So shower at the gym and change underwear. Or do the same when you get home. Just not in the car."

4. Prolonged sitting period

For a population that excels at not moving, this is no surprise. “Think about the heat and pressure at the center of the earth,” Heraldson mused. “Instead of the inside of planet earth, imagine the same thing on your butt, all that heat and pressure leads to volcanoes or in this instance, big ass zits.”

5. How do I prevent butt acne?

Shower regularly, especially after a workout or whatever causes your regular butt to be a swamp butt. And put on clean clothes. “I’m not sure why anyone would put dirty clothes on a clean body," Heraldson wondered. “That’s like taking an un-shower.”

6. Do not wear underwear you already wore

Hard to believe in the 21st century Americans need reminding, but Heraldson identified a possible reason. “Americans are too lazy to get up and change the channel on their television,” he said. “If the prospect of zits the size of jelly beans on their backsides does not motivate a change of underwear, nothing will.”

7. Wear clothing with breathable fabrics

Lycra spandex that fits snuggly will allow sweat to evaporate more quickly than with traditional underwear. A pair of traditional boxer shorts will soak up and hold moisture and make the wearer feel like his diaper needs changing. (SwampButt Underwear is made from lycra/spandex for faster evaporation).

8. How do I know if it's butt acne?

What difference does it make? Not much of one. If you have red bumps on your backside, they may be caused by ingrown hairs or as medical types refer to it,  folliculitis, aka clogged hair follicles. So, this is not technically acne, but whether technical or not, these are still a zit or zits.  "If there are bumps on the butt that are painful and/or inflamed, no one will engage in a conversation about, 'is this acne or not,' Heraldson stated. "Just stay as dry and clean as possible or get that way quickly. This will likely be a help."

About SwampButt Underwear

SwampButt Made in the USA Brand Underwear performance undergarments are made from a blend of lycra and polyester fibers. How the undergarment works and what it is made of are related. First, there is the phenomena of ‘wicking’ which is the way moisture travels across a larger area of fabric. The more and further moisture (in this case sweat) can disperse across a surface, the faster it can evaporate. Imagine a squeegee pulling water across a windshield.

When spread to a larger surface are, the water on the windshield evaporates faster. Or push rainwater across a driveway or parking lot into a larger surface area and it also evaporates faster. The same thing happens with SwampButt Underwear. Sweat wicks across a larger area and evaporates faster because of this. The rate of wicking is related to the materials and the way sweat spreads across them. Polyester fibers are hydrophobic because they are really plastic and will not absorb moisture. Our performance undergarments are made from lycra and polyester fibers.
