Healthy Habits: Mediterranean Diet

Recently, Insider released an article about how eating a Mediterranean style diet may reduce the risk of life-threatening preeclampsia in pregnancy, especially for black women. Preeclampsia is characterized by high blood pressure and organ damage during pregnancy. These risks can be decreased by incorporating vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats.

Registered Dietician, Jamie Feit, says this has actually been named one of the best diets overall.

“The primary guidelines are to use olive oil as a fat source, and to consume mostly  fruits, vegetables  and whole grains. Dairy and animal products are  consumed in moderation. Sugar and processed food are discouraged and wine is the source of alcohol consumed. This diet is good for our  health  as it limits sugars and highly processed  foods which are not healthy. Including  a  variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains provides increased fiber in the diet . Fiber promotes lower cholesterol, stabilized blood glucose control and weight loss.

Here are some tips to bring the Mediterranean diet to your life:

1.     Eat nuts, seeds and olives

2.     Select a whole grain bread and high fiber grains

3.     Use olive oil

4.     Add a variety of vegetables to your meals

5.     Eat fruit for dessert

6.     Cut out sugar and processed foods”
