Whether we like it or not, emotions often rule our lives and relationships. But it can be challenging to see them clearly and express them wisely, especially when we need to most.
Enter D. Earl Johnston, a former world champion sailor and one of the youngest bank presidents in U.S. history. When his early teenage daughter suffered a serious injury which triggered an emotional crisis, Johnston decided it was time to learn about mental health—beginning with understanding the essence of emotions. Among the thousands of sources he researched, he found short and memorable expert quotes to be exceptionally practical tools. As Leonardo Da Vinci wrote: “All thoughts start with emotion.”
His new book, Emotional Shorthand: 2500 Greatest Self-Help Quotes and Life Insights, brings together 2,500 of the greatest short quotes and insights of all time, from 1,000 leading thinkers across nearly 3,000 years of world history—with the goal of helping to solve modern problems.
From Aristotle to Shakespeare, Twain to Einstein, and some of the most prominent experts on emotions of all time — Carl Jung, Bessel van der Kolk, Brené Brown, Daniel Goleman, Stanley Porges, Eckhart Tolle, and many more—Emotional Shorthand delivers gems of wisdom and practical insights about 180 emotions from the world’s most experienced professionals.
Uniquely organized by emotions, the book offers a transformative, cliff-notes-style self-help reference that everyone can use to untangle critical feelings such as anxiety and serenity, depression and joy, determination and enthusiasm, love and hate—as well as emotional experiences like trauma, bullying, procrastination, vulnerability, grief, and betrayal. Equal parts witty and profound, it’s also an ideal reference for anyone crafting a speech, presentation or proposal.
As sixteenth-century Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes noted: “A proverb is a short sentence based on long experience.” In ten minutes spent with Emotional Shorthand, readers will absorb millennia of experience through fun, provocative, and enlightening insights that deliver both personal clarity andemotional literacy—and have the power to trigger “Aha!” moments and to change lives.
