Fun Freetime: The Key Components That Make Korean Drama So Addictive

Korean drama has become one of the most renowned types of drama in the industry - and certainly with good reason.

Watching a Korean drama is nothing short of entertaining, and there are times when you can't get enough of it! It's not like many other forms of drama, where you have to wait several weeks or even months for the next episode. With a good Korean drama, you'll find yourself glued to your TV set day after day. Luckily, there are many Korean dramas to watch and more are becoming widely available for all audiences to enjoy.

So what is it that makes Korean drama so addictive? Here are some of the core components that you will see commonly incorporated.

Intricate and Well-Crafted Plots

The very first secret to successful Korean drama writing is the basic premise or concept. This is the basis of the story, and any great drama should begin with a solid central idea. Once the writer has decided on the concept, they should create a plot or a background.

From here, the critical elements of the story can be built, and the rest will naturally fall into place. If the story seems disorganized or contrived, the writer should remove the unimportant elements and focus on the central idea.

Watching a good drama is like being transported to another reality. One where the characters live their lives, learn new lessons, fall in love, find happiness and get sick and die. The viewer has to be able to relate, whilst also being gripped and captivated by the central storyline.

Ability to Create Suspense

The second component is the central conflict. The conflict must be understood from the various characters' point of view. The conflict should be solved but not become a constant, dull struggle between good and evil or right and wrong.

A conflict that only one of the main characters can resolve is of less interest to the reader than a conflict that requires a change of course by all the main characters. A drama built around one central problem is more exciting than a drama that involves many minor issues for the various characters. These are usually the conflicts that drive the story. They can also be the conflicts that the audience cares about most.

Diversity in Genres

Korean dramas are typically composed of different genres and there is usually a story for every one of the characters. The three most popular genres in Korean Drama are tragedy, comedy, and military drama.

The tragedy is the most traditional type of story and is usually related to a death or tragic event. There are also many Korean dramas and movies based on fantasy, with stories about wizards, princes, and elves being quite common.

A highly popular genre in Korean drama is of course romance. This is usually a situation where a strong and wealthy man falls in love with a more vulnerable female and the pair unite. This is the classic story that you see in dramas such as Full House.

The most renowned and often gripping theme however is the revenge story. In this story, the main character will seek to find answers as to who wronged him. The purpose of this is to exact his revenge on the person, and in this type of drama, the movie or show itself becomes the protagonist whereas the audience becomes the supporting cast.

Background Music

The creative and often excellent use of music in Korean drama helps to enhance the plot and the characters. The music expresses the emotions of the characters, and this is what makes the drama so potent and effective. Most of the music is used to communicate the emotional experience and not to simply titillate.

Fast-Paced Drama

Another element that makes Korean drama such a great watch is its delivery. Unlike many American shows, Korean dramas are shorter, fast-paced and quick to conclude. This keeps the viewer engaged and makes it very easy for the director and actors to take advantage of the quick pace to get the message they seek to deliver across.

Gifted Actors

There is something particularly enchanting about the actors’ ability to create suspense, not to mention the complex stunts. The actors in Korean dramas engage in a substantial amount of character development, which makes the show even more thrilling.

There are loveable teenagers, evil secret agents and powerful military leaders and even a celebrity crush or two. You're guaranteed to fall in love with at least one character by the end of the first episode.

Many actors go on to become renowned names worldwide, and some are also famous for more minor roles. Stars including Kim Sang-bum, Jun Ji Hyun, and Choi Hee-jin are good examples of this. The variety of actors you will see in Korean dramas is certainly impressive.

Conclusion

Korean dramas are indeed a great watch. They will leave you glued to the screen as you laugh and cry along with your favorite characters.

They are filled with beautiful scenery, diverse storylines and are full of action. And they’ll surely have you coming back for more.
