Healthy Habits: Tips to Keep Your Skin Looking Young and Healthy without Super Sun Intake and “Miracle” Products

The American Academy of Dermatology says skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Current estimates are that one in five people will develop skin cancer and approximately 9500 people are diagnosed every day.

Sunbathing, whether outside or at a tanning salon, is a go-to for young and healthy-looking skin. But too much exposure to UV rays is the most common way to get skin cancer. Tam Tran a Family Nurse Practitioner for TopDoc Clinics https://topdocclinics.com/, says there are some easy alternatives to sun exposure or a beauty product spending spree to get the skin you want.

Tam's Tips:

1) Moisturize…EVERYDAY! – it is easy to forget but moisturizing right after taking bath to better seal in moisture should be part of your daily routine.

2) Pick the Right Skin Foods – focus on foods with a lot of antioxidants. Think colors: dark green leafy vegetables, avocados, sweet potatoes, broccoli, and berries. And don’t forget Omega-rich foods like Salmon.

3) Home Healthy Exfoliation – Try making your own exfoliator like brown sugar and olive oil. Other common home products that you can use to keep your skin looking healthy like oatmeal, milk, and honey.

4) What’s Good For the Gut…- Tran says maintaining good gut health is key. This is a very little factor is skin health. Have a diet that is high in fiber and low in refined sugars especially high fructose corn sugar and processed foods.

5) C for your Skin - Vitamin C has been shown to even out skin tone, reduce dark spots, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, heal skin and brighten complexion. Look for vitamin C healthy foods and supplements.

6) If you are sunbathing…. – Always apply sunblock when spending an extended period of time in the sun. The best sunblock for your skin is mineral-based with SPF 30 and above. Mineral-based has zinc and titanium oxide versus chemical-based sunblock.
