Movie Minute: FilmRise Celebrates AAPI Month

May is AAPI Heritage Month and FilmRise is putting their rich library of AAPI-centric titles front and center for you to enjoy. Their titles celebrate AAPI creative voices from across the globe and they're thrilled to honor them this and every month.

First up is new release title MARVELOUS AND THE BLACK HOLE, the debut feature from writer/director Kate Tsang, who has written for such cult favorites as “Adventure Time: Distant Lands” and “Steven Universe Future.” Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, the film stars Miya Cech (ALWAYS BE MY MAYBE) as a juvenile delinquent grieving her mother’s death who forms an unlikely bond with a surly magician, played by Rhea Perlman (“Cheers”). The bulk of the key crew on the film are Asian American women. This film is available to rent on demand now.

They're also showcasing countless free streaming AAPI titles, including comedy favorite “Kim’s Convenience,” a series that follows the trials and tribulations of an Asian family running a convenience store. There is also the acclaimed film DRIVEWAYS, directed by Andrew Ahn, whose buzzed-about new film FIRE ISLAND is about to hit HULU. DRIVEWAYS follows an Asian American mom and her son (Golden Globe-nominee Hong Chau and newcomer Lucas Jaye), who bond with their next door neighbor (Brian Dennehy). Our AAPI-centric titles run the gamut of comedy, to drama to horror, and beyond.

In fact, you can get a sampling of all of these AAPI-centric titles during their AAPI Heritage Month Marathon on the FilmRise Free Movies 24/7 channel from May 20 to May 22. The marathon is free to stream on The Roku Channel, Amazon Freevee, The Roku Channel, VIZIO WatchFree+, Samsung TV Plus and more.

Keep reading to learn about some of the other featured AAPI titles including docu-comedy MEET THE PATELS starring Ravi Patel (WONDER WOMAN 1984, “Master of None”), BAD RAP starring Akwafina (SHANG CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS, CRAZY RICH ASIANS) and more.
