Book Nook: Five FREE Books for the Summer Slide

Studies have found that the average student lost 17–34% of the prior year’s learning gains during summer break.

Waterford.org encourages parents to seek out some of our free PreK book resources, especially during the “summer slide.” The U.S.-based nonprofit is offering the public these free five books to encourage caregivers and their children to talk about cultural awareness and tolerance for early learning literacy development. The organization is dedicated to delivering authentic, diverse content; providing mirrors where children can see themselves, and windows where they can see other cultures in the materials.

The FREE online books in English and Spanish are:

  • Violeta (English | Spanish) A Mexican-American immigrant child is bullied for her shyness.

  • Navajo Beads (English | Spanish) A grandmother and granddaughter make jewelry and practice counting in Navajo Beads. Features a Navajo grandma and granddaughter.

  • Duc Tho Le's Birthday Present (English | Spanish) Duc Tho Le gets a meaningful birthday present from his grandfather. The grandpa and grandson are refugees from Vietnam.

  • The Talking Lizard (English | Spanish) Mai-Li has a gecko that lives in her room. This book is set in China.

  • Lorenzo's Llama  (English | Spanish) Oro the Llama helps Lorenzo in a time of crisis. This is set in the Andes.

  • Mine (English | Spanish) A girl learns about the traits she inherited from her family and what is unique about her. This includes a multi-racial/cultural family. Allows includes inheriting non-genetic traits which would support adopted children.

For over 13 years, Waterford.org has mastered online learning and an early childhood curriculum for Pre-K students that will lead your child to success for the rest of the academia. The U.S. -based nonprofit is a FREE academic resource (in most states) for online early childhood education learning, and includes providing tablets, internet, and support, where parents are their children’s teachers first.
