Parenting Pointers: Social Media Survey

Social media was created to help people connect, while in recent years it seems that it’s done more harm than good. As platforms have become more popular and easier accessible, parents may be more apprehensive about what their children are exposed to.

The team at SimpleTexting conducted a nationwide survey asking Americans to rate each social media platform’s level of toxicity, the kind of negative content they’ve seen on their feeds, and more.

Here’s what they found:

  • When asked which platforms have the most trolls, respondents said Twitter (38.1%), Facebook (26.9%), and Reddit (14.8%)

  • 46% of people say they’ve interacted with someone in a negative manner on social media

  • 6 in 10 people are afraid to post about certain topics on social media for fear of negative feedback

  • Nearly half of the survey (45%) said Instagram has had the most negative impact on their self image

  • 90% of people say they’ve seen racist posts by people in their network
