Consumer Critique: Relevant - Your Skin Seen One & Done Everyday Cream with SPF 40


Nyakio Grieco, boss mom, co-founder of 
thirteen lune and beauty expert with 20 years of experience is launching a brand new beauty brand, Relevant: Your Skin SeenThe brand's first hero product,  One & Done Everyday Cream with SPF 40, is a daily sunscreen and day cream formulated with clean, mineral-based SPF ingredients that are paired with an antioxidant-rich R-Rev complex to protect all skin tones. It contains ingredients to help moisturize and leave skin feeling smooth and hydrated, and protects against 97% of UV radiation. I had a chance to try it out, and even it's a physically blocking mineral sunscreen, it doesn't leave a white sheen behind on skin - it's actually possible to get it to fully absorb. The Relevant brand has been created to ensure that every person of every skin tone, age, background, and experience feels seen and has products that fit their needs. Nyakio worked closely with the chemists to create these product formulations and pulled from her own experiences in the beauty industry and with thirteen lune to develop a brand that understood the niches in the market. The products use clean, multi-tasking formulas that are science-led but still go back to Nyakio’s roots of holistic health and living.


I had a chance to interview Nyakio to learn more.


  • Why did you decide to launch a new beauty brand?

My vision for Relevant is to take my two decades of experience as a beauty founder and now a retailer to find ways to do better to serve all people. Where I saw white space in the market is continually doing a deeper dive into ingredients that are safe for all skin tones and don’t leave anyone out on treatments, percentages and levels that impact people with more melanated skin. As the co-founder of thirteen lune, I was able to incubate this brand to understand where the niches are in the market based on need for all skin tones and types. I loved being so involved with the process and was able to work with the labs I wanted and cherry-pick a diverse mix of chemists to ensure our products  were being made by the best talent for these specific formulations.

  • What sets Relevant apart from other beauty brands?
    • Relevant: Your Skin Seen, pun intended, speaks to ensuring that every person of every skin tone, age, background and experience feel seen and relevant. I know as a black woman beauty founder and consumer, we all deserve to see ourselves reflected on shelves for the beauty choices we seek.
    •  I wanted to launch with the One & Done Everyday Cream SPF 40 because it truly has everything that you need for daily care, being a 4-in-1 lightweight cream that can replace your daily moisturizer, serum, sunscreen and primer. It provides mineral-based sun protection against UVA/UVB rays that is suitable on all skin tonesfrom the lightest to the darkestwithout leaving a white cast. It contains our R-Rev Complex, which protects and refines skin with a potent blend of antioxidant-rich superfruits and actives—Plum Oil, Niacinamide, Kigelia Extract, Buriti Oil, Sea Buckthorn and Green Tea. Topping that off is Squalane, Sodium Hyaluronate and Apple and Oat extracts calm, nourish and moisturize all skin types.   • What advice do you have for other entrepreneurs who are juggling parenting and launching a business?
    • Commit to regular family time each week and stick to it no matter how demanding business may be. Years down the road you won’t be able to recreate the dance recitals, school activities and game nights and vacations you’ll miss. Family activities that seed the importance of community are key at our home, such as making sandwiches to donate to lunch programs. My husband also started a vegetable garden in the backyard during the early days of COVID and we all tend to it. It’s been a joy to plant, nurture, pick and prepare great meals as a family.
