Smart Safety: Short-Term Rental Safety Tips

As the summer travel season heats up, millions of people will flock to Airbnb, Vrbo, and other short-term rental platforms which offer guests a more personal and unique experience than a hotel.

According to SafeHome.org recent report, most of the time the stays go smoothly for both guests and hosts, but safety issues occasionally arise at short-term rental properties. Some of them are shocking enough to make the news (such as identity theft, burglary and at-home hazards).

SafeHome.org share the below safety tips for short-term rental guests:

  • Research crime rates and other safety metrics relevant to the city or neighborhoods you might stay in.
  • Avoid bookings that lack reviews.
  • Depending on the platform you choose, book only with verified hosts, superhosts, premier hosts, or hosts with a good number of positive reviews.
  • When viewing property listings, make sure there are basics such as smoke and CO alarms, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits.
  • Go through all of a listing’s pictures to get an idea of what the neighborhood, building, and rooms look like.
  • Message hosts through the rental platform if you have questions. Don’t go off-platform or pay hosts directly.
